Things To Do In Cannon Beach, Oregon

(Last Updated On: November 26, 2020)

One of my favorite places to visit in all of Oregon is Cannon Beach. This tiny costal town, with a population of 1,700 people is relaxing, beautiful and friendly. With over eight years of living in Oregon I have visited this spot so many times I have lost count. In today’s post I will share with you the top things to do in Cannon Beach.

Why Visit Cannon Beach?

One of the things I love most about Cannon Beach is how quaint it is. You will be hard pressed to find a mainstream hotel chain or a Starbucks. But if you can’t live without your Pike’s Place roast, head to the Bald Eagle Coffee House. This is the closest you can get to a Starbucks. Here they proudly serve Starbucks Coffee.

Cannon Beach is also very popular with visitors and locals because of its proximity to Portland, Oregon. Situated only an hour and a half west of Portland makes this an easy day trip. In my opinion driving out to the Oregon coast is an effortless escape from the bustling city life of Portland.

Where to Stay?

There are many rentals listed on VRBO and Airbnb. You can find a range of options from ocean front condos to large homes. I have personally stayed in a small two bedroom ranch bungalow that offered an outdoor grill, an easy walk into town and a charming fireplace.

If you are looking for a small hotel I recommend the New England style Cannon Beach Hotel. This spot has a small cafe on the first floor and is just a few blocks from the beach.

Top Things To Do

There is something for everyone in Cannon Beach. Whether you prefer to be active or simply relaxing on a beach chair rest assured the entire family will have a good time.

If you want be active, I recommend biking or hiking.

For beach bike rentals check out Family Fun Cycles. This shop is located in the heart of downtown Cannon Beach. With just a few blocks from the beach you can easily ride your rental bike, equipped for the sand, to the beach in no time.

There are two hikes that I recommend…

The first is at Ecola State Park.

Located in Cannon Beach proper. A parking pass can purchased for an entire day for only $5. Simply drive your vehicle into the park and from here you can access the spectacular trail with views of the pacific ocean. This stretches for about nine miles.

In addition to ocean side views, you can also take in stunning panoramic views of the Tillamook Rock Lighthouse.

The second hike I recommend is Neahkahnie Mountain

To get to the base trail of this hike you just need to drive south of Cannon Beach about 12 miles. The hike has an 8 mile option or a 2.6 mile option. I have only done the 2.6 mile hike.

The view is absolutely breathtaking! The summit is a fairly small area, and not the best for having a picnic. However this is still such a beautiful place to be in nature. I recommend it.

Fly a kite

All of the coastal towns in Oregon boast their love of flying kites. It is a very popular activity among kids and adults alike.

In town you can find kites at many of the souvenir shops.

When low tide hits its time to explore the tide pools near the iconic Haystack Rock. Kids and adults will love finding sea urchins, crabs, sea stars and snails, just to name a few.

Best Places To Eat In Cannon Beach

Ecola Seafood is hands down the absolute best place to grab lunch. This family run restaurant also doubles as a seafood deli. This is especially handy if you are renting a a place with a kitchen, as you can pick up fish, oysters, shrimp and crab to make for dinner.

My second favorite place to eat in town is the Pelican Brewery. The food here is elevated pub fare and excellent local brews. Pelican Brewery opened its doors in 1996 with its first brewery in the coastal town of Pacific City. From Cannon Beach this original location is an hour and a half drive south on the pacific coast highway 101.

But instead of driving all the way to Pacific City you can stay on the shores of Cannon Beach you can enjoy the same craft brews and grub.

There are two places that are my go-to’s for coffee while I’m in Cannon Beach. The first one is Insomnia Coffee. Located in the heart of downtown, and just steps to pacific ocean, this spot gets a lot of traffic.

Here they brew up Dapper & Wise coffee. This is an independent coffee company located in Portland.

My second recommendation is to go to Sleepy Monk Coffee. This shop is located on the southern end of town, but is very popular. The ambiance is cozy and dimly lite. It is not uncommon to see a line form around the perimeter of the building. But it is worth the wait.

Something Sweet To Try

To satisfy any sweet tooth try one of the delectable crepes from the Creperie shop in downtown Cannon Beach. Even if you’re not hungry, simply walking by and smelling the sweet nutella and strawberries will change your mind.

Bring Your Furry Friend

Cannon Beach has often made various accolade lists for how dog friendly they are. I do think that this is my dog’s idea of heaven. She loves running along the water’s edge and dipping her paws in the water.

Window Shopping in Downtown

A fun activity in town is to simply grab a coffee and do some shopping or browsing in one of the many shops that occupy this quaint little town. You will find shoe stores, souvenir shops, women’s clothing boutiques, wine tasting, restaurants, art galleries, chocolate shops and bookstores. There is enough to keep you busy for hours on end.
