How Manual Pinning Exploded My Traffic

(Last Updated On: January 15, 2021)

After blogging for two and a half years and growing traffic at what feels like a snails pace, I decided to do something different in the Spring of 2020. Instead of paying for a social media scheduler such as Tailwind (which I have tested and did not go well), I decided to focus on manual pinning.

The strategy of manual pinning is a bit different for everyone. Because this is the case, and different niches grow at different paces, sometimes it is really hard to know what the right growth strategy for your blog really is.

The best thing you can do is experiment with your blog. What I mean by this is test what time you pin, what boards you pin to and what content is resonating with your audience the most.

If you do that and pay attention to what is actually working you will know what direction to go it.

Plain Jane Lifestyle Summary Statistics

Above you will see my blog traffic growth month by month since I started this blog back in November 2017. I want to call your attention to the right hand “total” column.

Notice the huge increase for the entire year of 42,303 visitors. I know that some bloggers get this in a month, but as I am still figuring out what works and what doesn’t this is so gratifying to see this growth.

The two prior years I only received 9,173 visitors in all of 2019, and then 6,315 in all of 2018!

For a lot of people that are just starting their blogging journey and trying to learn how to build traffic or create an online business, we need to save all the money we can, am I right?

So to me, the pure thought of a focusing on a manual pinning strategy was something that I wanted to focus on because I did not want to have to keep paying monthly for a Tailwind membership.

To be transparent I have signed up and gotten rid of Tailwind a few times throughout the last two and a half years, and I can honestly say nothing has gotten me more traffic than when I pin manually at the right time to the right board, consistently.

The Main Reason I Got Rid of Tailwind Was The Cost

The cost of keeping a basic membership with Tailwind was doable. However its the extra payments of tribe power-ups that really add up.

In case you are not familiar, Tailwind Tribes are similar to a Pinterest group boards. But the power of a Tailwind tribe is way more beneficial than a Pinterest group board these days.

I found that in order to have a benefit from Tailwind, I needed to belong to a lot of tribes. And, to belong to a lot of tribes that meant spending more money.

I will say that if you are looking for a way to boost your traffic considerably without spending money, manual pinning is the way to go.

After Implementing A Manual Pinning Method My Users Increased Over 300%

Users went up over 300% after implementing manual pinning

As you can see from the screen shot above taken from my Google Analytics account, my traffic was less than 100 users per day prior to full implementation of manual pinning.

My Exact Strategy

I am going to share my exact strategy that I use every day to bring traffic to my blog.

The first thing I do is make five brand new pins with Canva. Canva is a free design website that allows you to create Pinterest pins for free. There is a ton of customization options, fonts, colors and free and paid stock photos.

The next part is a combination of pinning manually directly to Pinterest as well as utilizing the free Pinterest scheduler.

That’s right, you can actually schedule pins with Pinterest for free! This means as I queue up brand new pins, I can decide when to have them published.

I usually schedule my pins between 8:00pm and 10:00pm at night. Pinterest only allows you to schedule pins about 10 days in advance, and only allows you pin on the hour. For example 8:00pm, 9:00pm, or 10:00pm. You cannot schedule a pin to go out at say 8:14pm.

I do this every single day, which is a commitment, but it only takes me a half hour tops to get this done. It has paid off big time for me.

Plain Jane Lifestyle blog traffic per month from August 2019 to January 2021

As you can see from the screen shot above my blog traffic from 2019 to 2020 is like night and day.

The most exciting thing about this graphic is that the January 2021 data is only 11 days into the month yet it is almost on par with the rest of 2020.

You Need To Make New Pins

Pinterest favors brand new pins. So my strategy includes creating brand new pins pretty every day. While it sounds like a lot of work, sometimes the only thing I change is the photo, font color and maybe the font size as well. A few tweaks and Pinterest thinks it is a new pin.

In January 2021 Traffic is Increasing 3X

My blog traffic in January 2021 is already nearly 3000 visitors and it is only a third through the month. This is really cool because usually that is where my traffic has been plateauing over the past nine months.

This makes me very excited about where manual pinning methods can take my blog in 2021!

Manual Pinning on Pinterest is Worth Your Time

Making a conscious effort to set aside 30 minutes each day to promote your blog on Pinterest will give you results. I honestly believe that if you focus on creating five new pins per day, and publishing them at the correct time you will see some awesome results.

As you can see the pin above that I took a snap shot of from my phone shows that it had 123,000 impressions, 886 saves and 3,000 link clicks!

You Will Learn More About What Your Audience Wants When You are Manually Pinning

When you start getting into the weeds of your blog by looking at Google Analytics, Pinterest Analytics and watching your daily and monthly traffic statistics grow you will start to notice patterns of what content is doing great and what isn’t.

Sometimes the content that doesn’t do great just needs a more appealing pin. For that reason you should always test out new colors, fonts and background images to see what people are gravitating to.

Final Thoughts On Manual Pinning

If you are wondering if a manual pinning strategy is for you consider the following:

  • You don’t want to spend money on a monthly scheduler
  • You’ve been blogging for a while and are in a traffic rut
  • Your ready to increase traffic so you can monetize your blog

In my mind you have nothing to lose by simply trying this method. It doesn’t cost any money, just 30 minutes of your time each day.
