The cities of Portland, OR and Seattle, WA are like sisters. Getting to and from these two coffee loving pacific northwest cities is easy. You have many options whether you want to take a plane, train or automobile and all options have their pluses and minuses. In this article I will point out the benefits of each mode of transit between Portland and Seattle.
This is the fastest way to travel and the most expensive. But if saving time is what’s most valuable to you, then this is the way to go.
I have flown Alaska Airlines from Portland to Seattle and the flight’s between these two cities are so frequent that you can leave pretty much any time of day that your little heart desires. The flight time is 1 hour give or take a few minutes. That’s not too shabby.
From the Seattle Airport (SeaTac), you can choose to take the train into the heart of the city for $2.50 one way and it will take about 45 minutes. Or you can Uber/Lyft/Taxi from the airport to downtown and it will take you half the time about 23 minutes but will cost you about $53.00 with tip.
The train will take the longest amount of time with 3 ½ hours – 4 ½ hours depending on the time of day you leave and how often it stops. But, this will be your cheapest option.
The average fare is $27 if purchased 30 days in advance. A few cool things I like about the train is that you get free Wi-Fi, there is a food and beverage cart where you can get a snack, coffee/tea or alcoholic beverage. I also like the fact that you can relax and not have to worry about driving on the highway.
The train station in Seattle is in a convenient location, right near the baseball and football stadiums. You can walk from the train station to Pike’s Place Market in less than 30 minutes (a 1.1 mile stroll to be exact). Or if you prefer you can Uber/Lyft/Taxi from the train station to Pike’s Place Market and it will take you 12 minutes.
A fun road trip in your car will take you about 2 hours and 45 minutes between Portland and Seattle.
Remember if you are staying at a hotel in either Portland or Seattle as opposed to staying with friends you will most likely have to pay to park your car per day which can be around $25-$30.
But if you enjoy having your car while on vacation so you can come and go as you please this is the mode of transportation for you.
